Unloading

Crane with a cage
When using a crane with a cage, the cage wraps around the Bulka Bag and pallet, requiring at least 300mm of space between bags for safe lifting.

Crane without a cage
Without a cage, the crane can lift the bags directly by the handles, which does not require spacing between bags.

Hiab

Forklift
A forklift can be used to lift pallets with Bulka Bags on top or lift the bags directly by their handles.

FAQs
What is a Bulka Bag?
A Bulka Bag, also known as a bulk bag or big/jumbo bag, is a large, flexible bag made from durable woven polypropylene. Designed for strength and convenience, these bags hold bulk materials such as sand, gravel, mulch, topsoil and other landscaping or construction products.
Bulka Bags are ideal for projects with limited site access or where materials need to be delivered to elevated or lower-ground areas. Each bag features strong lifting loops, allowing safe and efficient handling by crane (with or without cage), Hiab or forklift.
How big is a Bulka Bag?
Bulka Bags hold around 1m³ of material and are rated for loads of up to 1.5 tonnes, depending on the product. When placed on the ground, their base measures roughly 1 metre by 1 metre. Once filled, they are too heavy to move manually and require a machine or pallet jack for relocation.
How are Bulka Bags delivered?
Bulka Bags are delivered on a tray truck and can be supplied on pallets if required, to make removal, handling, and placement easier.
Can I reuse them?
For safety reasons, bulka bags are only for single use. They can be safely lifted multiple times - as long as they remain in good condition while being on site - but they cannot be refilled. Once your project is complete, the bags can be placed in your council bin or repurposed as a convenient garden waste bag.
How can Bulka Bags be safely unloaded?
Bulka bags can be unloaded by crane, Hiab or forklift. Site personnel are responsible for ensuring equipment and handling comply with safety regulations to prevent injury, damage or loss.
- Hiab (truck-mounted crane) - lifts Bulka Bags using the lifting loops.
- Crane with cage – wraps around the Bulka Bag and pallet.
- Crane without cage – lifts Bulka Bags directly by the handles.
- Forklift – lift pallets loaded with Bulka Bags or lift Bulka Bags directly by the handles.
When do I need spacing?
- Minimising Damage:Bags that rub against each other during transport can suffer tears and abrasion. Spacing prevents this friction, preserving the integrity of the bags.
- Reducing Spillage Risk:Spaced bags are less likely to move during sudden stops or sharp turns, significantly lowering the risk of contents spilling.
- Easier & More Efficient UnloadingAdequate spacing gives the crane, Hiab, and forklift the room needed to manoeuvre safely and position the bags without risk of damage.
